Posted in Uncategorized with tags Last Lecture, Randy Pausch on September 29, 2009 by Glenn HarrisThis past weekend I had the good fortune to attend a lacrosse banquet and had a great time. One of the speeches that was given actually brought me back a couple of years. The player giving the speech quoted some points from Dr. Randy Pausch’s “Last Lecture.” I wanted to share a link from a video of Dr. Pausch’s lecture on the Oprah Winfrey show. Take a moment to listen to this inspiring and humbling presentation.

Precision Nutrition Tip of the Week
Posted in Nutrition with tags cholesterol, John Berardi, Precision Nutrition, saturated fats on September 29, 2009 by Glenn HarrisWhen you are grocery shopping, do you take your time to read the labels of the items that you are buying? Personally, I take my time to walk the aisles and read the information. Remember, you have to educate yourself on what you are buying to put in your body. Just because somewhere on the box it says the food is healthy doesn’t necessarily mean that its entirely true. John Berardi’s new nutrition tip tells you why…
Unhealthy ‘Health Foods’
by Dr. John Berardi
Products that claim to be ‘Cholesterol Free’ and ‘Low in Saturated Fat’ often have the most trans-fatty acids. Unfortunately these are the products that most of the public thinks are ‘healthy.’ Remember, trans fats have absolutely no place in the diet! They’re the only type of fat highly associated with very negative health outcomes.

The Man Maker workout
Posted in strength training with tags Dan John, strength and conditioning, strength training, weight training on September 28, 2009 by Glenn HarrisIt’s the title that caught your attention, isn’t it? Well, I have to give the credit to Dan John for naming that workout. I was reading an article of his recently and he was discussing the 23 minute Man Maker. It’s five exercises and you go from exercise to exercise. The first round begins at 10 reps for each exercise. The next round is 9 reps of each. The workout continues until you reach 1 rep of each. It’s a hard day in the weight room. I set the clock for 23 minutes and counted down…I was able to finish with 2:04 on the clock.
Give the article a look over and see what you think.
Precision Nutrition Article of the Week

Have you thought that you have been doing everything right and you’re just not seeing the results that you want? A nice healthy breakfast and you are seeing your waistline grow instead of shrink? Well I may have some suggestions on how to get help you get in the shape that you are looking for. What you really have to focus on is NOT restricting yourself when it comes to eating. Eat healthy but eat Smart. One of the down sides of strict eating is that you sometimes falsely “reward” yourself with unhealthy choices:
Meal 1
1/2 cup oats, 4 egg whites
Meal 1B, aka “I feel restricted and deprived.”
This is when the day begins to feel daunting and the meal plan feels very restrictive. Translation: Time to retaliate. Next stop – coffee shop for a jumbo coffee with extras and a scone.

Precision Nutrition Tip of the Week

It’s time to get focused. The summer cookouts are over and we all know that you probably had more than your fair share of cheat meals at those parties! But now that the cookouts are over, its time to put away the thought of “it’s ok to have that cheat meal.” Well, its ok to cheat if you’re in a position to have that cheat meal. If you’re too fat…well then you have to focus hard to obtain the results you want. So with that, I want to share with you Dr. Berardi’s tip of the week:
Tip #12
Skip the Cheat Meal, Fatty
by Dr. John Berardi
Cheat meal frequency should be minimized when you’re over 15-20% body fat. Basically, the fatter you are, the more likely that any excess food will be shuttled toward body-fat storage rather than muscle mass. So skip the cheat meal unless you’re lean. And even then, think of it as an alternative food meal – not a cheat. Cheat meals are usually glorified forms of dietary debauchery. Alternative food meals allow for something a little different from the norm without the trough.
