Where does the time go?

I always love hearing from people that they just spent hours at the gym. Why would you want to strength train in the gym for hours when studies show that the return benefits decrease when you spend more than an HOUR on strength training? If you are spending too much time in a weight room you may be either doing too much…or you may be talking too much.
One way in which we get our athletes through their workouts efficiently is to time their workouts. In the weight room at BU we have a digital timer which we can set to any interval we would like during the workout. We can time work sets as well as time rest periods. The great thing about keeping a timer on during workouts is that it keeps the socializing to a minimum and it gets teams through their workout at an efficient pace. Whether you workout in a facility with a giant digital clock or you have your own personal stopwatch, you should give it a try to see the difference in your workout intensity.

Go ASU!

This Saturday Appalachian State University will kick off its football season at LSU. Good luck to Coach Jerry Moore and the rest of the Mountaineers! I’m looking forward to watching an exciting game. Prior to arriving at Boston University, I received my Master’s degree in Exercise Science from ASU in 1996.

What should I eat?

I get that question consistently from a lot of the athletes and people who I train. Whether you are trying to gain, lose or maintain your current weight, Eat this and Not that is an easy reference to use for anyone who is looking for information to help them make better decisions when they are hungry. Give it a try and enjoy your next meal.

Team Work with the Redeem Team

I was reading an article the other day in the USA Today written about the Gold Medal game between the USA and Spain. It talked about how USA Basketball had returned to the top. What I found to be more interesting was how team work and togetherness was the focus of team USA throughout the Olympic Games. Captain Jason Kidd summed it up best when he said, “There was a college atmosphere of everyone cheering for each other. It’s all about each other, not about I.”
I think its important for our athletes to discover the togetherness within their teams early on in the year. Being able to develop the “team first” mentality which helped Team USA win Gold at the Beijing Olympics can make for a successful year. Great things can happen when everyone on the team is committed to the same team goals.
